In 2016, unbeknownst to each other, two DC artists were reckoning with themes of self-worth and their place in America, both quietly working to express these thoughts through their music.
Eventually these two artists met on a stage in Ivy City and knew they had to collaborate.
Late last year, that collaboration resulted in the Backbeat Underground single “She Don’t Love Me (Like I Do)” on Fort Knox Recordings featuring Aaron Abernathy himself on vocals – an allegory about the troubled relationship between marginalized persons and the country they love.
Around the same time, Abernathy released the critically acclaimed concept album “Dialogue” which follows the day in a life of a young man questioning the conventional wisdom surrounding him, with songs about ”being black in America and how we’re better when we come together to love each other.”
Inspired by the socially conscious “musical dialogue” in the early 70s by artists like Marvin Gaye and Sly Stone, both these contemporary soul artists are plotting a new conversation through message music and “songs of conscience.”
