Cooking Up History: Carnival and Haitian Food Traditions

Love food? Love history? Join us at the National Museum of American History for our free monthly cooking demonstration this February as we team up with the Embassy of Haiti and the National Museum of African American History and Culture for a Carnival celebration.

On February 10, we’ll explore the history of Carnival and how communities in the Caribbean and United States celebrate this holiday through food with celebrity Haitian Chef Jouvens Jean. Food historian Ashley Rose Young and curator Joanne Hyppolite will speak with chef Jean about Haitian Carnival traditions while he prepares several dishes that highlight his personal history and wide-ranging culinary career from winning season six of Food Network’s “Cutthroat Kitchen” to writing his own cookbook, “Tap Tap Diaries.”

Looking for tickets? No need! This program is free to attend and takes place at the National Museum of American History. No tickets are required to enter the museum or attend the program.

Please note: there are no food tastings at Cooking Up History programs, just food history! If you do get hungry however, the museum has a cafeteria on the lower level that serves up tasty food inspired by different American culinary traditions.
