DEVILDRIVER – TRUST NO ONE 2016
Throughout history, the number 7 has been linked to luck. By the same token, numerology attributes this digit to the seeker—constantly searching for truth while not taking anything at face value. It’s no coincidence that DevilDriver’s seventh full-length album bears the title Trust No One [Napalm Records]. This ballsy, brash, and brutal burnt offering ignites the group’s fiercest ten salvos to date. Straight out of the gate, key tastemakers embraced the record with KERRANG! calling it, “A snorting, snarling heavy metal beast,” and Metal Hammer going as far as to say, “Trust No One is a monstrous comeback that cackles with renewed verve, ideas and energy that’s the equal of the band’s finest achievements.” However, hearing is believing. As singer Dez Fafara and guitarist Mike Spreitzer invited guitarist Neal Tiemann, drummer Austin D’Amond, and bassist Diego Ibarra into the fold during 2015, the music’s direction became crystal clear.
“We knew we wanted to make something aggressive,” declares Fafara. “I had punk rock in my mood at the time. This thing has that flavor. I went back to a literal form of writing I haven’t utilized since our first album. In that sense, the album is as direct as I could get. You’re feeling that street vibe. Trust No One was meant to come at you with punk rock attitude, resurrected vigor and vision driven by the camaraderie of new friends.”
As well as old…the band would once again enlist the talents of longtime friend Mark Lewis behind the board as producer. However, this time they channeled a gutter grit and gusto that packs a wild wallop. Opener “Testimony of Truth” segues from an airy guitar into a visceral lyrical beatdown, while the first single “Daybreak” steamrolls ahead with breakneck riffs and one of Fafara’s catchiest choruses to date, “Don’t count me out.”
“It’s about looking forward to the future,” he goes on. “Through my music and career, I’ve maintained this positive ideal, always keeping my head above water. Neal initially brought the demo to the table, and we made it into a monster.”
Elsewhere, “My Night Sky” builds off a brooding guitar intro telling a story of, “being built for the kill.” Meanwhile, Fafara penned the band’s first song dedicated to his wife “For What Its Worth” as the chilling and heartfelt closer. Everything is left on tape…
“As I started writing, I realized, ‘You can’t fucking trust anybody,’” he sighs. “It stunned me, but it’s our world. I’m writing what it’s like to be human. You don’t give yourself away quickly, but you fight for and protect the ones you love till death.”
Trust No One follows up 2013’s Winter Kills, which bowed at #32 on the Billboard Top 200 moving over 11,000 copies first-week. To date, the band has developed one of the most rabid fan bases in heavy metal which has packed festivals and venues everywhere to witness their gospel of intensity. None is more intense than Trust No One though as DevilDriver enters what’s poised to be its biggest chapter yet.
“It’s a renewed energy for sure,” Fafara leaves off. “It’s also who we are and what we have to do. We’re not going to fucking stop.”
