Docs in the City: Spotlight on Identity

Explore the theme of identity through documentary, including an opportunity to watch a documentary from award-winning filmmaker Grace Lee, and provide feedback on a new work-in-progress from Chelsea Hernandez.

Join us for a screening of celebrated documentarian Grace Lee’s iconic film, OFF THE MENU: ASIAN AMERICA. The film takes us on a journey across the United States to explore our obsession with food as a launching point to delve into a wealth of stories, traditions, and unexpected characters that help nourish this nation of immigrants This screening will be followed by a Q&A with filmmaker Grace Lee.

In addition to featuring this new look at a classic with the filmmaker, there will also be an opportunity to provide feedback to an up-and-coming filmmaking team. Director Chelsea Hernandez and Co-Editor Sarah Garrahan will screen a work-in-progress of BUILDING THE AMERICAN DREAM and get feedback from both Grace Lee and the audience. This film follows the intimate stories of hard-working, predominantly Latino families fighting for their livelihood and lives in Texas, a state where more construction workers die on the job compared to any other state. will be present and await your feedback on their work-in-progress film.
