Focus: FJAAK – Julia Govor – Rush Plus at Flash

Friday, October 6th • Bar opens 8PM, Green Room 9PM, Club 10PM.

FJAAK is a Berlin-based trio with a penchant for constructing breakbeat-ridden dancefloor bombs. Their boundary pushing take on techno, informed by countless days and nights spent in the studio, has landed them lauded releases on labels like Modeselektor’s Monkeytown imprint as well as the revered 50 Weapons label. They bring their LiVE setup to the main room.

Russian born Julia Govor’s distinct, groove-oriented take on techno has taken her to some of the world’s most heralded dancefloors, performing alongside the likes of Sven Vath, Jeff Mills, and Richie Hawtin at venues and festivals like Output, Arma17, Off Sonar, and Movement in Detroit. Her chops in the studio are nothing to scoff at either, having signed releases to labels like Cocoon, Hypertone, and most recently, Rhythm Cult. She joins the Berlin boys in the main room for this edition of FOCUS.

FJAAK:
FJAAK is an electronic music trio from Berlin. Having grown up together, they began to create all types of music made with microphones, guitars and drums in a dark, chaotic and dirty cellar at quite an early age. After getting in touch with the Berlin underground techno scene, days and nights started being all about music. Whether it was chopping beats on the MPC in the morning hours or studying manuals, the internet, vinyl stores and Schneiders Buero.

Starting to gain worldwide attention in 2009 with an alternative and boundary-pushing take on classic techno, house and breakbeat they have meanwhile started their own party series based on all hardware setups and vinyl only – machine vibes. Starting off with open-air events in Berlin, machine vibes now takes place in carefully selected venues around Europe. In 2014 they signed to 50Weapons and have since released two captivating and very fresh sounding techno EPs. Modeselektor have hot tipped them to be the next big thing. We cannot wait to hear more.

JULIA GOVOR:
Julia Govor was born to move people. She made her debut performing in a small military town in Abkhazia, which led to her becoming the cassette-DJ at the town’s nightclub. Every Saturday, the ever-diligent Julia was on stage performing new songs by Russian singers or songs written by her oldest sister, Galina.

Fast forward a few years, Julia has clearly been deeply inspired by the techno artists she’s been playing with and begins to produce herself. She honed a sound which boasts distinctly resonant frequencies alongside uncommon melodies and subsequently had tracks snapped up by Visionquest, Get Physical, Highway Records, Hypertone and Superfreq.

A relocation to New York has seen Julia perform alongside the likes of Jeff Mills, Richie Hawtin and Sven Vath at Output, Time Warp, Awakenings and Electric Zoo. 2016 has seen her gain the support of Pete Tong with releases coming on Cocoon and Russian vinyl only imprint Body Parts / Mind Series.

At the core of Julia’s music and live shows is an ever-present element of emotional truth and a quest to redefine her audience’s relationship with beat. Simply put, she firmly believes in churning out sexy techno grooves with dramatic expressions and select layers of sound. Not to forget the boundless charm and ambrosial melodies. That is, in a nutshell Julia Govor.
