A film that had been in development hell for nearly 30 years, Fury Road was Australian director George Miller’s first non-kids’ movie since 1992 – in between, he had directed, written, and produced the Babe and Happy Feet films. (Yes, the same man who gave us the line, “Witness me!” also gave us, “That’ll do pig.”) The film is non-stop action from the moment Charlize Theron’s Furiosa goes off her designated route and takes the tyrannical warloard Immortan Joe’s brides on an escape journey, and she must forge an unsteady alliance with the captive Max Rockatansky to succeed in her goal of freeing the women. Utilizing extensive practical effects with kinetic cinematography and editing that adds to the heavy dosage of action bombast, the film boils down to a character study and centers itself on the themes of vengeance, survival, and control through the major focus of feminism. The film uses the wasteland surrounding the characters to focus on the characters on opposite sides of their gender’s supposed role for them (Max compared to Nux, Furiosa vs the wives) and then subverts those roles, thus painting them in the complexity of reality and making ourselves question gender roles and our prejudices. Released to wave reviews in 2015, Fury Road received ten Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director, winning six awards (Costume Design, Film Editing, Makeup & Hairstyling, Production Design, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing), making it the most highly awarded Australian film in Oscar history.
