About the album Pitchfork writes: “Having mastered the rock crescendo, Wye Oak use “The Louder I Call…” to nail down something a bit more subtle. Wasner and her bandmate Andy Stack piles on drum machine beats, synth pads, and choked, distorted guitar riffs into a graceful, if uneasy, ambience. It’s as if they’ve taken a page or two from St. Vincent’s playbook: Both their guitars and Wasner’s rippling, dense vocals nod to how Annie Clark plays with her genre, though Wye Oak are less interested in teasing out the spiny edges of rock music, and more invested in the song’s emotional sweep. That mood, rendered in the depth of Wasner’s voice and the instrumentation buoying it, is terrifying and liberating at the same time, a sea change toward a new horizon.”
