Smithsonian Food History Weekend Festival

The third annual FREE festival all about food history with fun for all ages!

Part of the 2017 Smithsonian Food History Weekend, National Museum of American History is hosting a day-long festival for families, students, food-enthusiasts, history buffs and more to jump into food history!

Through live cooking demonstrations, hands-on learning, fascinating deep-dive talks, activities outside, and the chance to meet culinary stars, experts, and more… join us as we explore the past, present, and future of food and community in America. Festival Schedule Highlights:

LIVE COOKING DEMONSTRATIONS
10:30 AM – 4:15 PM
Catch live cooking at our demonstration kitchen as chefs, historians, and homecooks share their tips, stories, or family traditions behind their recipes.

THE KIDS’ TABLE
10:30 AM – 4:15 PM
A place for young budding chefs to practice their culinary skills by touching, smelling, looking, and doing.

SPARK!LAB INVENTION ACTIVITIES
10:00 AM – 4:00 PM
A space for inventive minds ages 6 to 12 to invent and solve problems relating to food growing, harvesting, transportation, preserving, and more.

DEEP DISH DIALOGUES
10:45 AM – 4:30 PM
Historians, diplomatic specialists, chefs, restaurateurs, and a celebrated food journalist dig deeply into the cuisines of the new America. (Free registration recommended in advance)

FESTIVAL BOOK SIGNINGS
11:00 AM – 2:15 PM
Meet and have books signed by participants of the Festival. (Books available for purchase onsite)

AGRICULTURE ON THE MOVE!
10:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Explore where some of our favorite foods really come from, how they moved around the globe to get here, and how farmers work with them in America today.

FOOD HISTORY UP CLOSE
Various times
Rarely seen collections objects and research that tell stories about the history of food and migrations of people in American history.

SMITHSONIAN GARDENS ACTIVITIES
11:00 AM – 2:00 PM
Step outside on the West Terrace for garden tours, seed saving, and the history of flavors in America.
